We had an amazing wonderful day and were touched by the number of our community that turned out to help us celebrate and eat cake!
Not only did our community join us to explore the new community base and to give their great ideas on how they would like to see our community space used, we had a number of representatives from support organisations such as Supportive Parents and CONTACT and also team managers from some local authority teams such as Transitions and the 0-25 service who recoginise the work we do, how we have grown and what value we have in working co-productively with them to make posiotive changes for our community.
Leonie Pollinger gave a great speech that took us on a whistle stop tour of SGLOSPC from our roots in 2009 as 8 parents meeting in a coffee shop to an online database on 1,113 and a Facebook closed group community of 603 and Facebook following of 1,537 and an amazing group of 40 volunteers without whom we could not have made happen all that we do. From our very humble beginnings we have grown to offer so much including:
Being the parent carer voice within working groups, boards, panels and going to many many meetings with education, health and social care services, asking for and working with these services to create positive change for our community.
Professional and Parent led workshops on SEND key areas: Anxiety, Sensory Needs, Communication, Behaviour that challenges, Disabilities and complex physical / medical needs.
A stay and play group, Little Treasures for pre school children and babies with additional needs.
Low cost counselling.
Our popular Mangotsfield Support Group
Creating and publishing Really Useful Guides and Preparing for Adulthood Guides to help parents on their SEND journey
Our community met our new ‘Face of the community Base’ Caz Le Roy
Caz will be working at the base and developing all that we want to offer and what our community would like to get from this wonderful space.
Our base will be a warm welcoming space for drop-ins on Thursdays and to hold workshops, courses or talks on Mondays. We even have the use of a sensory room that was a huge hit with the children and many of the adults! Check out this beautiful space and the fun that was had
Many more good times to come…
We started our first week open with an amazing Mindfulness course for parent carers working with Naz of The Wellbeing College. This is just a taste of the kind of things our base could be used for
We want to hear from you about any ideas or thoughts about how we can use this space to support parents and carers in South Glos and you can do this by completing the short ideas survey below by clicking the button.
